Wood shortage leads to downtime ......... less chemical consumption?

The wood shortage, caused by the short and mild winter in Finland, Sweden and Russia, has adversely affected harvesting conditions and reduced wood exports from Russia. This has particularly affected birch pulpwood. In addition, export duties on roundwood announced by Russia has also aggravated the wood supply situation. The consequence is that a number of mills are facing wood shortages and considering slow-downs, shut downs and lay-offs. For paper chemical suppliers, a reduction in production implies lower chemical consumption.

As an example, Stora Enso Oyj has today announced that it is starting 'co-determination negotiations' concerning possible temporary lay-offs of personnel at its Kemijärvi pulp mill in Finland due to the shortage of wood.
